ALONE says plans to knock 100 euro off people's energy bill are a welcome assistance for older people.
However, it says it doesn't measure to the inflation seen throughout 2021, with an average increase of over 489 euro across all electricity suppliers.
A rebate plan to be considered by the cabinet on Tuesday would cost the exchequer 170 million euro.
ALONE CEO, Sean Moynihan says the electricity credit is needed due to fuel poverty:
"We're obviously delighted that older people are going to get some support and some relief against the rising energy costs. But the reality is that fuel poverty really has a detrimental effect on the quality of life of older people, and the costs involved here, between gas and electricity, are up to 700 euros per household, and we don't think it's a it's a burden that older people can pay."
