The United Nations says at least 847 Ukrainian civilians, including 64 children, have been killed since Russia invaded the country.

The organisation says almost 14-hundred people have also been injured - 78 of them are young people.

The UN thinks most of the casualties were caused by shelling and airstrikes and that the actual toll is much higher.

Meanwhile, reports suggest an arts school in Mariupol where around 400 people were taking shelter has been bombed.

The council for the besieged south-eastern city, claims people are trapped beneath the rubble.

Nicholas Williams is a former senior official at NATO and says targeting populated areas seems to be part of Russia's new plan:

"It goes along the lines of the Russian revised strategy which is to grind down the opposition and to take out towns particularly in the South and East."
