Government resistance to touching excise began to crumble as the war in Ukraine led to another severe spike in the cost of fuel.

This morning an incorporeal Cabinet meeting will approve a cut to excise, before a press conference at 11am and a financial resolution going to the Dáil in the afternoon.

It's expected the cuts will amount to a 15c reduction in a litre of diesel and 20c on a litre of unleaded petrol.

That will kick in at midnight in the same way to a regular budget.

Cabinet has been warned that Ireland could face fuel and food shortages because of the Ukrainian crisis.

The Irish Independent reports that a 'worst case scenario' briefing has been presented to cabinet ministers and outlines how fuel may have to be rationed and public transport services cut, if the energy crisis sparked by the Russian invasion spirals out of control.

The United States has dismissed a plan from Poland to give fighter jets to Ukraine.

The idea was to send them first to a US base in Germany.

However the Americans say they'd be worried about the prospect of planes departing there to head into airspace contested with Russia.

Unions representing healthcare workers will address TDs and senators this morning on the ongoing overcrowding crisis in hospitals.

Representatives, from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation, Forsa, SIPTU and the Irish Medical Organisation, will appear before the Joint Committee on Health.
