"Chernobyl has re-entered centre stage for all the wrong reasons."

That's according to Adi Roche of Chernobyl Children International, who was speaking to RedFM News to mark UN Chernobyl Remembrance Day.

Today is the 36th Anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster - the worst in history.

She says that there are reports of an alarming rise in radioactivity in that region of Ukraine as war manoeuvres disturbed radiation trapped in the exclusion zone's soil.

Chernobyl Children International is calling for an immediate evacuation of those trapped in the Chernobyl Region, and on the Irish Government to lobby the UN to declare any attack on Chernobyl or any other nuclear facilities be deemed a war crime.

They want the Chernobyl region to be declared a 'no War Zone'.

Speaking to RedFM News, Adi says that nature of modern warfare has changed.

"Chernobyl has re-entered centre stage for all the wrong reasons on the 24th of February, when we got news that Russian troops were en-route to capture Kyiv via the world's most toxic, radioactive and dangerous environment on the planet.

"That cavalier act alone, of driving thousands of troops and war paraphernalia to what's known as the Chernobyl exclusion zone, that signified to the world that the nature of warfare is changing."
