The Taoiseach says the government do not anticipate the need to ration fuel this winter at the moment and says the rising cost of fuel and energy is a more immediate concern.

Micheál Martin was speaking in Cork following a meeting of the Emergency Energy Group earlier this week where the rationing of oil and gas products was discussed in light of the continuing war in Ukraine.

The National Oil Reserves Agency holds around 85 days-worth of oil including home heating oil which can be used if there is any shortage

A leading economist says the government is well placed to meet the demands of the cost of living crisis after exchequer figures revealed a five billion euro surplus in the nation's finances for the past 12 months.

It compares to a deficit of 5.7 billion euro recorded to the end of July 2021 - an improvement of 10.7 billion euro.

The Consumers Association of Ireland says the cost of home heating oil is not reducing at the same rate as petrol and diesel.

Motorists have seen the cost of petrol and diesel fall to just under two euro per litre in recent weeks as supply on the international market increases.

However the cost of home heating oil has not moved downwards at the same rate.

Gardai are continuing their murder investigation in to the death of Robert O'Connor at Mountjoy Prison.

The 34-year old inmate from Darndale, North Dublin died in the Mater Hospital on Tuesday night after his life support machine was switched off.

It's understood that at least four inmates participated in his killing last Friday.
