Parts of the country could see temperatures of 31 degrees today, as Ireland experiences what's likely to be the final heatwave of the summer.

Conditions are considered to be a heat wave here if five or more consecutive days of 25 degree heat are observed

Night time temperatures are unlikely to fall below 16 degrees - the public is being encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbours to ensure they're coping well with the heat.

After a second amber alert from the national electricity grid operator yesterday, a TD is calling for a stop to planned connections for data centres.

Eirgrid says Ireland's electricity system is experiencing "tight margins", due to low wind, limited electricity imports, and forced outages at a number of generators.

The second alert ceased last night, but Eirgrid is continuing to monitor the situation.

Green party leader Eamon Ryan is in mourning after his mother died suddenly while on holiday.

The Irish Independent reports that Mary Ryan had an accident while holidaying on Inishbofin off the coast of Galway.

A second teachers union is threatening strike action unless the Government delivers a meaningful pay increase.

Secondary school teachers are calling for a significant improvement in pay to help offset spiralling inflation.

National teachers across the country will also be balloted on strike action in the coming weeks over pay.
