A Senior government Minister says he hopes the Owenacurra Centre in Midleton can be upgraded rather than shut down.

Transport Minister Eamon Ryan met with families of residents at the long stay mental health facility on the grounds of Midleton Community Hospital while on a visit to Cork.

Family members of residents have been campaigning for the centre to stay open and say moving them to other locations will have a significant negative impact on their wellbeing.

A man has died following an assault in Sligo town earlier this week

The man in his late 30s suffered a head injury in the attack on Tuesday evening in the Rockwood Parade area of Sligo town.

Gardai say emergency services attended the scene shortly after 6pm - the man was taken to Sligo University Hospital, and to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, where he later died.

A 22-year-old man charged with murdering two men in Sligo will appear in court again today.

Yousef Palani is also accused of assaulting a third man.

There'll be a shortage of accommodation for Ukrainian refugees by the end of next week, according to the government.

Nearly 24,500 have arrived since the war began - and that could increase to 33,000 by the end of May.

Almost 1,300 are currently being housed in emergency accommodation.
