British and EU negotiators are to hold talks next week on the Northern Ireland protocol, to try to resolve a row.

The Taoiseach says the EU caused 'political mayhem' by its decision to trigger part of the agreement last weekend, in a dispute over vaccines.

Some post-Brexit checks at ports in Larne and Belfast remain suspended after threats were made against staff.

The British Prime Minister's threatening to dump part of the agreement - but Minister for European Affairs, Thomas Byrne, says there can be no major changes.

"The protocol can't be scrapped, it's an international agreement so that's not going to happen.

"But the operation of the protocol certainly can be looked at and there are issues there.

"The European Union Ireland and Britain can work together to make sure that it does operate in the best possible way for all parts of the community, and to make sure that Northern Ireland takes full advantage of the position in which it finds itself."
