A Northern Ireland civil rights campaigner and former government minister will be laid to rest today.

Austin Currie died on Tuesday, at the age of 82.

Eoghan Murphy has this report for RedFM News:

"Tyrone native Austin Currie spent the early part of his political career in Northern Irish politics.

He jointly founded the SDLP in 1970 and served as a member of the Northern Assembly and a minister in the executive.

In 1989, he moved to the Republic and was a Fine Gael TD in Dublin West from 1989 until 2002.

He was also a junior minister in the Rainbow Coalition, led by John Bruton, in the mid-Nineties.

He died at his home in Derrymullen, Co Kildare, on Tuesday.

A funeral Mass took place for him in Allenwood in Kildare yesterday.

Another Mass is taking place today in Edendork in his native Tyrone at 11am.

He will be buried afterwards in the adjoining cemetery."
