It's hoped Ireland could still host the 2024 America's Cup race after the selection period was extended.

The organisers say they are giving the shortlisted venues more time to continue to work through the final details and provide further information for their bids.

Earlier this week the government asked for an extra six months to consider Ireland's bid, amid criticism over the up-front cost of around €25 million.

Cork will be hosting the prestigious race if Ireland is selected.

Speaking to RedFM News, Eddie English from Sail Cork says it's the perfect location:

"We're very lucky in the sailing waters that we have, and in the tradition of sailing that we have here in Ireland. Many people don't realise that sailing has gone on as a sport in Ireland since the 1600s, with the first club in the world, being founded in 1720: The Royal Cork Yacht Club. But besides that, you've got amazing sailing waters, and you've got the infrastructure in Cork Harbour. The racing would have to be outside Cork Harbour, and it certainly would put Ireland on the map in terms of sport."
