Former DUP leader, Edwin Poots, last night failed to get selected as a candidate for the Stormont elections in May.

The North's Agriculture Minister's been an MLA for Lagan Valley since 1998, but was trying to switch to South Down.

However, the DUP yesterday selected Diane Forsythe to run there instead.

Ralph Hewitt, the assistant news editor with the Belfast Telegraph, says it could be the end of the road for Mr Poots:

"He may not be able to run in the Lagan Valley. With Paul Givan, especially over the past... almost a year now, he's been First Minister, at least for the past nine months and that's really raised his profile. And obviously Sir Geoffrey Donaldson, with him being the party later, it'll be expected that he would be running in the Lagan Valley."
