The planning application for the Celtic Interconnector has taken the next step.

EirGrid, the state body tasked with running the national electricity grid, intend to install an underwater High Voltage cable so that power supplies can be shared between France and Ireland.

They intend to land the 1 billion euro cable at Claycastle Beach in Youghal.

Yesterday the Department of Local Government published the public notice that EirGrid had applied to use an area of foreshore at Claycastle Beach for the installation and operation of the interconnector

The closing date for the receipt of written submissions, comments or questions from the public is 5:30pm on the 6th December.

It comes as Eirgrid has warned that the country could face electricity shortages in the coming years as the power system is being stretched beyond demand due to 'unprecedented growth' of Data Centres.
