Weddings won't be affected by new rules capping the attendance at indoor events, announced as past of new Covid restrictions last night.

Sporting, music and cultural events will have to be entirely seated and limited to half capacity from next Tuesday.

Nightclubs will close between December 7th and January 9th, while pubs and restaurants return to previous restrictions requiring table service only.

The Government says the moves were taken due to the potential risk to the health service posed by the Omicron variant.

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar says the advice about gathering in homes will not be law:

"The advice, as you know, is that no more than four households should gather in the one house. However, I want to be very clear that this is advice. It is guidance. It is not statutory. There'll be no Gardaí calling to people's homes to see how many are inside. And the government will not be telling you what you can or cannot do in your own home."
