Alcohol action Ireland say over half a million Irish people are showing some evidence of alcohol use disorders.

A survey released today shows that Irish men can drink 17 standard drinks for as little as €7.65 while women can consume 11 drinks for just under five euro.

Minimum unit pricing is set to be introduced in January 2022 and will mean a standard drink cannot be sold for less than one euro.

A member of NPHET says further restrictions won't ease at the beginning of September if Covid cases continue to rise.

The five-day moving average has increased by 27%  in the past two weeks, and now stands at 1,854.

1,558 new cases were confirmed yesterday.

There are calls for the passport offices in Dublin and Cork to reopen immediately, to try to address lengthy backlogs.

The Irish Travel Agents Association says the measure's needed - as current delays are unacceptable.

It says people are being forced to cancel their holidays, as many passport applications are taking at least eight weeks to process.
