Some sporting and recreation facilities could be reopened in the initial phase of the plan to ease coronavirus restrictions under draft proposals being worked on by officials.

That's according to the Irish Times and it's understood it would only apply to activities where social distancing can be maintained - possibly tennis courts and golf courses.

The draft plans are also believed to allow some sports team training in the initial phase, but only where there is no contact, where the groups of people training are very small and social distancing can be maintained.

Professor Anthony Staines, from DCU's school of nursing, says there will be some difficulties.

"The challenge with all of those is not the golf course, because you can remain socially distant, or the tennis match - it's the changing rooms, it's the clubhouse, that's the tricky bit.

"The major sports have been doing a lot of work on questions like 'how many people do you need to run a race?', and that's being considered.

"The issue about sport for the general public is not so much the sport itself, it's the social mixing that happens around it."
