NPHET will give the green light to the easing of Covid-19 restrictions when it meets later.

The timeframe and manner at which measures like the 8pm curfew will be relaxed will form the basis of discussions.

The Taoiseach says the government's in a good position to make a positive announcement on lifting restrictions.

He told a meeting of his parliamentary party last night Ireland's now "well beyond the peak" of the Omicron wave.

A final decision on any NPHET recommendations will be made by Cabinet tomorrow, after which an announcement from government's expected.

David Nabarro from the World Health Organisation says the recent decline in infection rates looks positive.

"The drop from 26,000 a day to 11,000 a day represents the peak of Omicron, and the decline, and it is a positive looking sign.

"However Omicron is a new variant, and we don't fully understand whether it's going to come as one surge or multiple surges, it's too early to say."
