It's claimed alcohol was consumed at the outdoor gathering at McKee barracks in Dublin which was attended by around 40 military personnel.

An allegation of sexual assault at the event made by a female Defence Forces member is now the subject of an investigation by military police.

The Defence Minister has ordered an external review of the BBQ in June of 2020 when outdoor gatherings were limited to just 15 people.

Independent TD and former Army Ranger - Cathal Berry - says today's committee meeting will be asking some obvious questions of Minister Coveney:

"He announced apparently an external inquiry into the defense forces issue in McKee barracks. But he hasn't announced an external inquiry into the Department of Foreign Affairs, champagne situation, so we have to look for clarity into why there isn't consistency between these two government departments. I suppose we're trying to aim to do this today when it comes to committee."
