Mandatory hotel quarantine is set to be extended by eight weeks.

It's due to end on June 8th, but the government will today propose in the Dáil that it lasts until the end of July.

It's because the EU's digital green cert for travel is unlikely to take effect here until then.

Fine Gael senator Regina Doherty is defending the planned extension.

"To be respectful to our scientists, all they're trying to do is keep us safe.

"There still are variants of concern, we're talking about the Indian variant at the moment, and we can see in certain pockets of the United Kingdom where that is exponentially growing.

"We need to protect ourselves from that, and any variants that come forward, and our scientists feel that mandatory hotel quarantine did that over the last couple of months."
