The government's emergency Covid powers will remain in place until February 9th.

They were due to end next week, but TDs last night backed a three-month extension by 82 votes to 44.

The legislation requires vaccine passports and face-masks to continue to be used in certain settings.

Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae says he's disappointed the vote passed.

"We've had the emergency powers for more than a year and a half now, and the cases are still going up and up.

"The emergency powers aren't of much use now the vaccine is wearing off or whatever.

"The emergency powers were put in place first of all when there was an exceptional need, and I don't believe there's an exceptional need there now."
