A Cork nurse is going back to work on the wards for the first time since 1992.

Katie Murphy used to work as a diabetes nurse facilitator and has this week started a new job at St Finbarr's Hospital in the City.

Over 60,000 current and former healthcare professionals signed up to the HSEs 'Be On Call for Ireland' programme since the outbreak of Covid-19.

Speaking in a video posted by Cork Kerry Community Healthcare, Katie Murphy says she was more than happy to return to her former profession.

"I felt there was something better I could be doing in the current environment.

"It was my feeling that everyone is doing what they can, and I have skills that are of use, so I was happy to go back into the ward environment.

"What's more important is direct care for people who are scared and sick, and that we can help.

"It might be testing going back to a ward where you haven't worked for years, but everybody has a part to play, we'll work with whatever skills we have to contribute."
