Rising Covid numbers have made people more cautious around their socialising plans.

That's according to the Cork City Chairman of the Vintners Federation of Ireland who says publicans across the city are reporting the cancellation of a number of Christmas parties due to fears over the rising numbers.

Yesterday the number of new cases of Covid 19 were reported at 2,975 and follows a call by the Chief Medical Officer to walk out of pubs and restaurants that were not checking Covid certs.

The hospitality sector is calling for stronger sanctions against pubs and restaurants who breach Covid regulations as they say the public would feel safer knowing regulations were being policed

Michael O'Donovan of the VFI told RedFM News that after the bounce the city saw over the Jazz Festival trade has been tough over the past fortnight and everyone is looking to a busy but safe Festive season in order to recoup losses.

"Members are concerned at the moment because the last two weeks have been really challenging trading conditions because people have been worried seeing numbers going up.

"The older cohorts have been very slow in coming out and socialising,  and that has a knock on effect on business.

"On the ground, people are just trying to survive really at the moment."
