Third level students will not sit their exams in exam halls next month.

The closure of universities and colleges and social distancing concerns due to Covid-19 have prompted the announcement.

Government says impacted students have been notified by institutions and other means of assessment have been finalised.

Dr Padraig Walsh from Quality and Qualifications Ireland says there are a number of alternatives available.

"Instead of sitting a sit down exam, they will do what's called a take home exam.

"It would mean the institutions would release an examination paper, and the students would have to sit the exam from home and submit the exam electronically in a similar manner."
