Work is finally underway to renovate Ireland's only cable car.

The towers and island anchor frame of the Dursey Island Cable Car will be replaced at a cost of 1.2 million euro.

Works began on the Beara Peninsula project last Monday.

The cable car has been out of commission since March.

It is expected to return to operation in November.

Dursey Island Cable Car was officially opened on the 5th of December 1969 to provide access for islanders and visitors.

It is the only cable car in Europe that crosses open seawater and is used by more than 20,000 people a year.

The steel for the project is being manufactured by Irish Pioneer Works on the Kinsale Road in Cork and will be transported to the island by a local marine contractor from Castletownbere.
