Students should not be locked out of going to college due to costs

That's according to the students union at UCC who are to mount a day of action at the end of the month following remarks about fees made by the President of UCC.

Speaking at a Cork Chamber breakfast briefing yesterday John O'Halloran says the current rate of 3,000 euro is cheaper than going to some private secondary schools.

His comments sparked confusion and annoyance among the student population at the college who didn't appreciate the private school comparison and say everyone should have equal access to third level education.

A day of action is planned for November 22nd next at UCC and there will be two further demonstrations at two other colleges around the country at the end of the month.

Speaking to RedFM News Maeve Richardson of UCC Students Union says fees are just the tip of the iceberg when weighing up the expenses around going to college:

"The cost of college, you know, the cost of the actual degree is only, you know, a part of the puzzle. It's high rents, it's the cost of commuting, it's accessibility and that's what it's all about."
