A students' union is urging authorities to act on reports of women being spiked with needles on a night out.

This weekend one UCC student spoke on social media about her experience, while Gardaí are also investigating an alleged incident in Dublin in recent weeks.

Maeve Richardson, the communications and engagement officer with UCC Students Union, says the issue needs to be taken seriously:

"It doesn't matter how many cases this is, how few or how many there is, no one should be apathetic to this matter happening on our island. There are people taking part in disgusting behaviour. We need Gardaí, nightclubs and everyone who can take an active role and looking out for these perpetrators. How are people getting into nightclubs with these needles is what I'm asking. And we need to keep our young people safe."
