UCC Students Protest For A Third Day As Row Over Rent Hikes Rumbles On

The Occupy the Quad protest began on Monday after the Students' Union called for a 3% rent hike at five UCC owned student apartment complexes to be scrapped and a three year rent freeze introduced.

Up to 30 students camped in tents on the quad last night and say they will remain there until the University's board overturns the decision to raise rents.

UCC say they did not raise the cost of campus accommodation between 2016 and 2018 and that it remains significantly below rates provided by private providers.
