The Irish Examiner reports the South/South West Hospital Group say the sharing of wards between male and female patients is not common practise.

However the group says it can happen in wards such as the Intensive Care and Observation Units for clinical reasons.

The hospital has also said patients under the age of 16 are always accommodated in pediatric wards.

CUH says it has reviewed admission protocols, accommodation, staffing and patients safety after a 62 year old man was convicted of sexually assaulting a 17 year old girl in a ward, however they have refused to confirm when the review was carried out, who carried it out and what action has been taken.
