The Taoiseach says the newly reopened runway at Cork Airport will be a key strategic asset for the south of Ireland for the next 20 years.
Micheál Martin was speaking after he officially opened the new runway at a ceremony this afternoon.
The airport was controversially closed down to allow for the ten week project; one of the largest and fastest in recent history, and will host it's first passengers again on Monday morning for a flight to London.
Eight airlines have so far committed to operating from the airport, with management saying they are hoping to make further announcements shortly.
Speaking after today's ceremony, Taoiseach Micheál Martin says the project has been a huge success:
"On time, within budget 10 weeks together project of this scale completed. That's the type of approach we want for the other projects within the national development plan and I think it's a good illustration of what can be done whatever really works collectively and with determination and I think it's good news for the Southwest, and I think it really positioned to the airport for future growth into the future. And then, that its own way helping the economic development of the region."
