The Taoiseach says measures to suppress the number of Covid cases do not necessarily need to include another lockdown.
Micheál Martin was speaking in the city in the past hour ahead of a meeting of the National Public Health Emergency Team on Thursday to discuss the spike in the number of cases.
It comes at a time of growing concern about the 4th wave of the virus and the impact it will have on the health service.
4,181 cases were confirmed in the country yesterday.
Speaking to RedFM News, Taoiseach Micheál Martin says the country is in a different place since the roll out of vaccines:
There actually has been a very significant suppression of the virus brought about by combination of vaccination and people's behaviour and that should be acknowledged because we always tend to highlight where things maybe not been adhere to, but actually, given this delta variant and so on, the level of suppression has been quite high amongst people. we just need to do more and get it below the R.1. and that would create space for us. and the responses during this phase don't necessarily have to be the same as the earlier phases and we take it step by step."
