The Tánaiste says houses and apartments must be built faster and says next week's vote of no confidence in the government by the Labour Party is being done for 'political reasons.'

Micheál Martin was speaking in Charleville yesterday where he defended the Government's approach to the eviction ban, which is due to expire at the end of this month.

The Government have said an extension of the ban would not protect renters and would lead to more landlords exiting the market.

Speaking to RedFM News, Tánaiste Micheál Martin outlines what he believes is the most effective way to prevent people becoming homeless following the ending of the eviction ban:

"Of course we want to prevent homelessness. And I think the way to do it now is to increase the direction to the County Councils and City Councils to buy properties where a tenant is in situ and at risk of being made homeless. I think that's the most effective way to do it. Last evening, I met with some City Councillors who said they're on cases now where that is actually happening. But where it's not happening, we do want to know about it, and then we will focus on the County Council and engage".
