The trade union say funding to keep Before 5 in Churchfield open has been secured and a new management structure is needed.

The community-run centre was due to re-open next week, however the parents of around 120 children were told on Wednesday that it would be closing

A statement from the board said financial difficulties, operational challenges and recruitment issues had forced the closure.

Speaking to RedFM News, Peter O'Brien from SIPTU says families and staff are devastated by the closure

"Could you imagine building up a young person to say they're going to be starting creche next week and they're buying pencil cases and school bags and lunch boxes.

And then for the families to receive a letter to say that this isn't happening, for the staff to receive a text message. There are staff members in Before5 that have been working there for 30 years

These are people that are from the community, that serve the community that know these families it's more than just a job"
