Shop owners in the city say they will feel safer when they see an increased Garda presence on the streets.

From tomorrow, Gardaí will step up patrols as the streets get busier for shoppers and traders in the run up to Christmas.

Businesses say that money skimming and theft is constantly on the rise and they’re happy to know that there will be more help nearby.

Speaking to RedFM News, Miriam Ray from Sheena’s Boutique on Oliver Plunkett Street says Gardaí and retailers should be working together:

"We don't have security per se so we have to place our trust in the people that come through that door. But there are opportunists out there doing the wrong thing. A stronger garda presence is badly needed and it's vital that we build and foster than relationship with retailers and the gardai. It's reassuring that the Gardai are nearby in the event that anything happens"
