The energy crisis, and spiralling cost of gas and electricity, has the potential to sink businesses.

That's the opinion of the owner of the Vienna Woods Hotel in Glanmire, Michael Magner.

On Friday, Bord Gais became the latest energy provider to rise its prises.

It announced a 34% increase in electricity prices and 39% jump in gas bills, from the 2nd of October.

Also on Friday, Captain Americans, the Queen of Rebels bar, and Rice Chinese on South Main Street announced that they has been forced to close permanently due to "difficult trading conditions which made the business unviable".

Speaking to RedFM News, Michael Magner gave an example of the difficulties being faced by businesses across the country.

"In conversation recently with a hotelier, his  electricity bills for  2019 for his property was €340,000 - at the end of this year it's forecasted to be €790,000.

"He was hoping to go fixed for next year, and the quotation caught recently was in the region of €1.6 million.

"He decided he couldn't afford to take it because if he accepted a contract of €1.6 million, it would have the potential to close and sink his business.

"That's how serious the energy crisis is. "
