Residents living near UCC are calling for a culture change around the annual RAG week celebrations.
That's according to the Magazine Road and Surrounding Areas Residents Association who say they are confident there will be less anti-social behaviour in their area this year.
Gardaí have told residents that they will be stepping up patrols in the area this week and will be issuing fines to anyone drinking in the street or engaging in anti-social behaviour.
UCC Students Union have also organised street clean ups for the area for the week.
Speaking to RedFM News, Chairperson of the Magazine Road and Surrounding Areas Residents Association, Catherine Clancy says local residents shouldn't have to deal with poor behaviour from students:
It shouldn't be the case, when young people, students, decide to celebrate, and RAG week is a very worthy week in one way, because a lot of charities gain from that, but it shouldn't be the case thatit has to be upsetting to residents, and that it takes all the forces of the law to deal with it. They need to learn how to behave and to be a cultural change within the University in talking to young people as to, you know, how they behave during RAG week."
