A Cork refugee centre has rejected concerns of protesters over the arrival of newly housed asylum seekers.
The Irish Examiner report that 63 international protection applicants have recently arrived at St Joseph’s Convent in Fermoy, including 25 children.
Up to 70 anti immigration protesters demonstrated outside the centre last night, calling on those seeking refugee status to be deported, while social media posts focussing on the facility claimed that Ireland was being “flooded” with single men from Africa
However in a message to locals the management at St Joseph’s Convent said they were “delighted” to welcome their guests, saying that there were no single males in their facility and that most of their guests were women, while male guests were part of a family unit.
The Examiner also report that a number of people stood across the road during the protest, in solidarity with the people in St Joseph’s Convent.
