Power outages are still affecting thousands of customers across Cork this morning.

2,500 customers remain off the power grid in with 150 individual faults across the county impacting 2,000 customers and up to 12 faults in the city affected 400 customers.

The worst hit areas in the city are Togher, Bishopstown, Glanmire, Ballincollig and Ovens.

The ESB says response crews were working throughout the night and since 6am full construction crews have been responding to the faults and they expect to have power restored to all customers across the day.

Schools in Cork are staying closed today following government advice.

Ralph Riegel, southern correspondent with the Irish Independent says a number of boil water notices are also in place across Cork.

"We're talking about thousands of homes without power, a significant number of other homes are either without water, or have low pressure, or are under boil water notices.

"You're talking trees down throughout the city and county - a lot of near misses but thankfully no injuries."
