Plans for a multi million euro expansion of the Crawford Art Gallery will move a step closer today.

The Irish Examiner report that a six storey extension is being proposed for the gallery, which will provide it with 45% more space.

Plans for the 32 metre tall red brick structure are being lodged today, with the plans also involving the moving of the entrance to Emmet Place, a new restaurant on Half Moon Street and an internal toplit courtyard.

The gallery will close for two years during the construction phase.

Commenting on the planning application, Minister for of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin said: “Today is an extremely important day not just for the Crawford Art Gallery, but for our wider cultural ecology. Today we are submitting a planning application for an ambitious project which will transform the Gallery, will create new public spaces for cultural expression and civic discourse, and critically, will see this heritage building restored and renewed to the highest standards of sustainability.”
