The planned closure of the Courts Service office in Youghal has been raised in the Dail.

Local deputies David Stanton and Sean Sherlock called on the Government to intervene to reverse the decision which means that victims of domestic violence in Youghal will only have local access to courts services once a week

The decision to close the court offices in the town is on health and safety grounds.

A spokesman for the Courts Service said that after the closure of the office, access to domestic violence services will be provided on site at Youghal town council every Friday, or by travelling to or phoning the Courthouse on Washington Street.

Speaking in the Dail Cork East TD Seán Sherlock called on the Justice Minister to meet with local deputies so they can raise their concerns directly with her and added that the proposed closure takes a service further away from the people who need it most.

"This is about ensuring that we don't force women who are subjected to domestic violence where they are seeking protection orders that they are forced to go to Cork from Youghal.

"It's taking a service further away from the people who are most vulnerable and who are most in need of the service.

"And I'm asking the government please to intervene with the court service to reverse this absolutely disgraceful decision."
