Residents living around Páirc Uí Chaoimh say the GAA could be putting a €30 million grant at risk if the stadium becomes more like an events centre rather than a sports stadium.

The Ballintemple Area Residents Association made the call one day after submitting a 25 page objection to plans to build car parks at either end of the all-weather 4G pitch.

The GAA say the car park will remain open to the public, while locals say they are concerned about the dangers of more cars in an area used frequently by pedestrians.

Colm O'Leary from the Ballintemple Area Residents Association says the GAA is entitled to hold events at the stadium but it must remain primarily a sports facility:

"You don't build the car park for 15 days of use for your events center.  There's national policy to develop an event center in Cork city center. This can't become an event center, it's contrary to national policy, it's also contrary to EU state aid rules. Páirc Uí Chaoimh received €30 million of government funding to develop the stadium. One of the key requirements is that this is primarily used as a GAA facility. Utilisation at the moment is low, there's  matches on here, but there's not a lot of matches on here. "
