Cork city is to get a "Night Time Economy Advisor" under a new pilot scheme.
Nine towns and cities are to have these advisors appointed under new licensing laws approved by Cabinet which will see nightclubs remain open until 6am.
Late licences will also be granted annually so venues don't have to go through the courts to re-apply every month.
The new legislation has been welcomed by the Arts Minister Catherine Martin who says she has been calling for the revitalisation of Irish nightlife to bring it level with the night-time economy of other European cities.
Speaking to RedFM News, Cork publican Paul Montgomery believes this proposal may help to turn around the fortunes of the nightclub industry.
