Road users are urged to use extreme caution on the roads this morning following heavy rain overnight.

An Orange Weather Warning is in place for Cork until midnight tomorrow, with torrential rain and thundery downpours expected.

Both City and County Councils are warning motorists to expect spot flooding on low lying areas and in areas that are prone to flash floods.

No major flooding has been reported in the city or county this morning.

The Road Safety Authority are also advising people not to drive through floods and say the water may appear shallower than it really is.

Speaking to RedFM News, Brian Farrell from the RSA has this advice for anyone on the roads this morning.

"If you try and drive through flooded roads,  you could end up getting stranded, you could end up destroying the engine of your car and more importantly, you could end up diverting emergency services.

"With wet roads, there's a danger of aquaplaning on those higher speed roads like motorways and dual carriageways, and it's so important therefore to slow down and leave extra space between yourself and the vehicle in front.

Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather says the stormy conditions were being felt last night, with west Cork in particular witnessing an intense electrical storm.

"There was some intense thunderstorm activity last night with a lot of lightning strikes detected and also some very heavy thundery downpours.

"The rainfall was pretty localised, but it certainly did fall very quickly and very heavily in parts of the south, especially of note was Rosscarbery, which saw some really intense lightening and thundery downpours."
