The Taoiseach has accused the opposition of playing politics with a motion of confidence in the Dáil.

The coalition is expected to comfortably win the vote with the backing of a number of independent TDs, including Cathal Berry, Michael Lowry and Peter Fitzpatrick.

People Before Profit has called for a change of government and for the coalition to back a bill to cap rents.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin says the suggested legislation is flawed:

"I will always take on proposals once they are realistic, but you're not tabling the motion in terms of realism. You're tabling it in terms of politics or in terms of being ultimately popular, and you proved it in your opening line."
