Parts of Cork could experience power outages as strong winds are forecast for the remainder of the day.

Met Éireann has warned of possible power outages and travel disruption.

A Status Yellow Wind warning for the country came into effect at 5am this morning and will remain in place until 2am on Friday.

ESB crews will monitor the situation and deal with any outages at local level - this morning over 500 homes and businesses were without power in Ringaskiddy, with the fault expected to be restored by 9.45

Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather says winds will pick up throughout the day across the country with the west and northwest set to be hit hardest.

"With winds really strong across the country right through this afternoon and this evening, the strongest of the gusts will be in the west and northwest.

"There is an orange level marine warning, and strongest gusts will be along the coasts of the northwest and on high ground.

"Unfortunately the length of these strong winds is quite unusual."
