Medical scientists are planning a further five days of protests in the next two weeks.

Members of the Medical Laboratory Scientists Association say they feel like they have no other alternative but to strike due to huge frustration in the profession.

They are calling for the HSE to implement a plan to tackle the recruitment and retention crisis in the sector and are also calling for pay parity to bring them in line with other colleagues in hospital labs.

Yesterday's action led to hundreds of outpatient appointments being cancelled and staff are due to protest from 8am to 8pm again next Wednesday and Thursday, with three further days planned for the following Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Medical Scientist Eileen Hurley was on the picket line at CUH yesterday and told RedFM News that five days of protests could have a serious impact on hospitals.

"We have a further two days next week, and I fear for the worst for the following week if it's not resolved by then, what it would be like to be out for three days.

"Today things are running relatively smoothly in there, but I don't want to see a hospital without a laboratory service for three days."
