A man who lost an eye and suffered severe chemical burns to his face and head says a letter of apology from his attacker came “too late”.

40-year-old Francis Costello was speaking outside Cork Circuit Criminal Court after John Paul Carey was jailed for nine and half years.

The 36-year-old Glanmire native with a previous address at Dunmanus Cresent in Knocknaheeny, Cork city pleaded guilty to three charges following the unprovoked attack at the Costello family home in March last year.

Speaking to RedFM News outside the court, Francis Costello outlined some of how his life has changed:

"I still have nightmares. I check the door every night before I go to bed to check if it's doubled locked. I have dreams and nightmares with him in it. I'm grateful for the support network of friends neighbors and family I have in my life to have been there for the last 20 months and continue to be  there. His letter of apology has come to late for me, all the bail applications that he put me through."
