The long-awaited Macroom bypass is to be officially opened today.
The first section of the €300m N22 Ballyvourney-Macroom road is due to open to general traffic later this morning (11am).
The scheme was divided into three sections for the construction phase with the entire project set to be completed by the middle of next year.
The bypass will eliminate a traffic blackspot on the main Cork to Killarney road ending traffic jams which backed up traffic in Macroom during morning and evening rush hour.
Local councillors believe the bypass will not only alleviate the traffic difficulties but will also provide a real opportunity to revitalise the town.
