The Lord Mayor of Cork City has declared a Clean Air Zone in the city centre.

The zone which includes Oliver Plunket Street and surrounding streets will be the first of its kind in an Irish city.

Five air monitors are to be placed on Oliver Plunket Street, Grand Parade, Patrick Street and South Mall by the end of June to measure nitrogen oxides to control pollution caused by petrol and diesel engines.

Cork City Council say that the move will result in cleaner air and less traffic noise in the city.
