Cork Chamber says the lack of housing in the city remains the number one issue for employers and are calling for more to be done to incentivise high density housing.

The Chief Executive of the Irish Exporters Association told an Oireachtas Enterprise Committee yesterday that the housing crisis is having a huge impact on the ability of small and medium businesses to recruit and retain staff.

Simon McKeever told the committee that housing has gone from a being a "pressing issue" to one of "great concern".

Cork Chamber say the completion of the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy road would allow the Port of Cork to complete their move to Ringaskiddy and would make the city docklands available for ambitious plans to house over 20,000 people.

Speaking to RedFM News, Rory Kelleher from Cork Chamber says more needs to be done to create the conditions that will allow high density housing to be developed.

"We need tax based incentives to deliver high density, high quality affordable housing in the city centre and in the docklands.

"There are sites sitting there with permission that are not moving because they are not viable.

"It's critical for business in terms of their employees and in terms of their new hires coming in, or people even looking to buy a house or move from rental into a house or move to a better rental.

"It's the number one issue for our members."
