Irish Rail passengers in Cork experienced severe delays this morning.

Several of Iarnród Éireann's Cork services on the Cork/Dublin and Cork/Tralee lines were delayed by up to an hour.

Two of Iarnród Irish Rail's Cork/Mallow trains were cancelled because of a technical issue and this caused knock-on delays to other Cork services during the peak morning commuter period.

Irish Rail says that the technical issue was not due to the hot weather, as had been speculated on social media.

Speaking to RedFM News, Company Spokesperson for Iarnród Éireann, Jane Cregan has these tips for those travelling by rail during the heatwave:

"Our recommendations would be that you would always carry water with you while you're travelling - just to make sure that you stay hydrated. We have water stations at a number of our train stations around the country. Also to wear clothing, that's loose and light and comfortable. If you're at the station and you're outdoors - particularly in stations which may have a lot of outdoor areas - ensure you wear your sunscreen and wear a hat. And never travel if you feel unwell, or if you do unwell on board, ask for assistance or ask for a seat if it's a very busy train".
