Work has begun on Iarnród Éireanns's largest-ever investment in the Cork Rail Network.

It's part of the NTA's Cork Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy to grow train capacity to 16 million passenger journeys per year - and move people away from private car use.

Several key projects are already underway, including the construction of a new through platform at Kent Station, signaling and communications upgrades, and double-tracking the Glounthaune to Midleton line.

Eight new stations, new fleet depots, electrification, and upgrades at existing stations are the next stage of the broader programme.

Ireland expects to receive 988 million euro in grants from the European Union to partly fund such developments nationwide.

Bus transfers will be in place at times during the works, including at weekends and the St. Brigid’s Bank Holiday.
